Supposedly founded by Hercules in order to commemorate the death of Cacus, the ancient Italic city of Fondi flourished during the Roman Empire. Indeed, the imperial family possessed several villas in the area. Acquaviva, Cima del Monte e Quercia del Monaco Natural Monument (Monumento Naturale di Acquaviva, Cima del Monte e Quercia del Monaco)
Established in 2004 in the municipalities of Fondi, Lenola and Vallecorsa, the Acquaviva, Cima del Monte e Quercia del Monaco Natural Monument is an area of great natural, environmental, scenic and historic importance which encompasses the ruins of the ancient city of Acquaviva (abandoned in 1540) and is characterized by the presence of wild orchids. The views over the plain of Fondi, the island of Ponza and Aurunci mountains are spectacular.
